The Sparkplug fall sports programs are off to an impressive start entering the final week of August. Here are some highlights: Boys Soccer: The Sparkplugs (4-0, 1-0 ICC) begin a month-long series of matches as the #3 ranked team in Class 2A. The Sparkplugs travel to WEBO on Tuesday and then travel to Class 2A #13 Cascade for their final ICC showdown ever. The Cadets will move to the Western Indiana Conference after this season. Boys Tennis: The boys picked up two wins in the Speedway Invitational Saturday morning, defeating Cardinal Ritter (3-2) and Scecina Memorial (4-1). The top two singles players (Hunter Woodlock, Ryan Hutchek) each swept their opponents as did the #1 doubles tandem of Corbin Woodlock and Camden Outlaw. The Sparkplugs look to capture their Invite title Thursday night when they host Beech Grove, a team the Plugs defeated earlier this season. Volleyball: The Sparkplug varsity squad is off to its best start in several seasons after sweeping Park Tudor and Union County on Saturday. Speedway currently sits 5-1 and 2-0 in ICC play. The girls travel to Ben Davis Monday night and then host Covenant Christian in a rivalry matchup on Wednesday. Peyton Ridge currently leads the team in receptions and digs while Laney Jarrett is a team leader in assists and aces. Mallory Short leads the team in kills per set while Hayli Clampitt leads a well-balanced attack in hitting percentage. Girls Soccer: The varsity girls fell to 4-1 and 1-1 in ICC play after a tough 4-0 loss to Class 2A #10 Monrovia Saturday. The girls look to rebound when they host 2A #15 Tri-West on Thursday night. Football: The varsity Sparkplugs fell to 1-1 and 0-1 in ICC play when they a tough Scecina squad, 37-26. Both teams were tied at the half and the Sparkplugs trailed by a point entering the fourth quarter when a couple of turnovers thwarted Sparkplug rallies. Scecina was ranked #5 in 2A last week and the Sparkplugs were highly competitive throughout the contest. This week, Speedway travels to Beech Grove which has lost a pair of ICC matchups to Lutheran and Cascade. Last year, the Sparkplugs were upset by the Hornets in Week 3, 51-35 so Speedway hopes to get revenge and return to the win column Friday night. Cross Country: The boys and girls competed in the Marion County Championship meet at Brebeuf on Saturday. The Sparkplugs survived a rugged weather running week and will be participating in a new event Saturday when they travel to the Columbus North Invitational for a 9:30 morning event.
