Today, we celebrate Audrey Burrell, a three sport standout student-athlete representing Speedway High School. Burrell has been instrumental in the long-term success of the girls soccer program, a team that has captured multiple ICC championships during Burrell’s career. “Audrey is a force to be reckoned with on the soccer field,” commented varsity head coach Stacie Burke. “Our opponents remember her from year to year and always try to shut her down...but it NEVER works. Audrey is a very talented young lady.” “Audrey does not shy away from challenges,” said Burke. “Audrey has made a big name for herself in the four years she has been playing soccer at Speedway.” Audrey not only represents Speedway on the soccer pitch, she plays in the ECNL (Elite College National League) for the FC Pride. She has been named to the All ICC and All-County teams representing Speedway. Burrell will return to the hardwood this winter as the Sparkplugs renew their quest to earn a sectional trophy. Her competitiveness and toughness is what impresses girls basketball coach Joe Smith. “I have enjoyed knowing Audrey for six years,” noted Smith. “She is the ultimate competitor, a win-at-all-cost type of kid. She is never afraid to voice her opinion to her teammates when they are not doing what they should be, and I admire that. She is a leader on our team without a doubt.” “Aside from basketball, I have enjoyed knowing her as a person even more,” added Smith. “She has grown into a great person and I am excited for her future. She will represent the United States in her military career very well. I am honored to be a small part of her life.” Audrey is the daughter of Michael and Rebecca Burrell. She has a brother named James who is a fifth grader at Wheeler. With great support from her entire family, Audrey credits her father as someone who has a great influence on her mentality. "My dad has always worked so hard for my family and is so loving to all of us,” said Audrey. “He is the person I talk to about everything and I want to be exactly like him when I grow up.”
