Speedway has one fall sports team that is still alive in IHSAA tournament competition. The varsity football team defeated Crawfordsville last Friday night (48-13) to open play in Class 3A Sectional 29. This week's opponent is a familiar one. This will be the third straight year that Monrovia and Speedway will have played in the sectional semifinal round. Friday's game takes place at 7 p.m. at Johnson Field. During the last two weeks, multiple Speedway fall sports programs have concluded their seasons. In girls volleyball, the 3A Sparkplugs won their second consecutive sectional championship during Fall Break, earning them a trip to the Monrovia regional. Speedway was defeated by eventual regional champ Tri-West. For the Sparkplugs, the loss concluded a season where the Sparkplugs were 21-9 overall and 4-3 in ICC play. It was the seventh sectional championship in the program's history. Sophomore Morgan Smith and freshman Luke Chastain participated in last weekend's Brownsburg Regional for cross country. Smith and Chastain qualified for regionals based on their individual finishes at the Ben Davis Sectional. For Smith, it was her second regional appearance and for the second straight year, she was one round short of qualifying for the state finals, quite an accomplishment. This was also the second straight year that Smith has won the Indiana Crossroads Conference meet, also an impressive accomplishment. Chastain was a member of the boys team that finished as ICC runners-up this year. Finally, the boys soccer team wrapped up another fantastic season with another tough loss to a talented Brebeuf Jesuit team. The fourth ranked Sparkplugs fell short against #2 Brebeuf, losing a 4-1 match held at Bishop Chatard. The boys finished their season 16-4 and won their fifth straight ICC title, going undefeated in ICC play.
