The fall ICC sports season is complete. And after tallying the points, Speedway is in first place in the ICC All-Sports Conference race. "Speedway athletes are doing an excellent job across all sports this fall," said Athletic Director Dan Maple. "This success is due to a combination of talented athletes who are dedicated to their sport, coaches who work tirelessly to get everything they can out of our athletes, and a very supportive community. We have great stability and depth in our fall sports programs making for a very competitive spirit driving them to excel in their respective sports." "Leading the all sports race after the fall season is a positive sign that Speedway athletics are going in a positive direction." There are three levels of competition for the all-sports standings. For the girls program, the Sparkplugs are in third place with 43 points earned. The girls soccer team finished as ICC runner-ups and the girls golf team finished third at the ICC golf tournament. Meanwhile our volleyball program advanced to the IHSAA regional while sophomore Morgan Smith won her second straight ICC title. Monrovia leads the girls race with 46 points followed by Cascade with 45. Three Sparkplugs boys teams finished first or second in ICC competition as the boys program accumulated 48 points this fall. The boys soccer team won its fifth straight ICC title en route to another IHSAA regional finals appearance while the boys tennis and boys cross country teams both finished second in the ICC. Speedway leads second place Lutheran by ten points in the boys competition. "First and foremost, successful athletic teams will increase your school spirit and pride," said Maple. Having a positive atmosphere at school is very important to developing student athletes. This helps character development, personal growth and skill acquisition both on and off the field." When you add the totals for both programs, the Sparkplugs have generated 91 points, giving them a healthy 14 point lead over second place Cascade (77) while Cardinal Ritter and Monrovia are just one point behind with 76 total points. "The more successful our teams can be, the more successful our school community will become," noted Maple. "Speedway athletes demonstrate many qualities that lead them to success in athletics and in the classroom," added Maple. "Our students buy into the 'education first' philosophy making them excel in the classroom. Our athletes are resilient, dedicated, and hold each other accountable to make sure their team is the best it can be. Our athletes' passion towards Speedway Schools and athletics is often contagious and inspires other to work just as hard as our athletes do."
