Today, we are celebrating Dasie Fayigbe, a senior student-athlete at Speedway High School. September proved to be quite a month for Dasie as she represented the girls golf team for the final time and she was also voted Homecoming Queen 2023 by the student body at Speedway. During her four year career representing the golf team, Dasie earned all four major awards (MVP, Mental Attitude, Most Improved, Hanna Scholastic) and she earned all-ICC honors as a junior and senior. So why play golf? “It’s the people you get to talk to and you create a lot of friendships,” said Dasie. “Sports helps you get your mind off of everything else, it’s an escape basically.” Some people would shy away from the challenges presented by golf. What was Dasi’s biggest golf challenge? “Consistency,” noted Dasie. “Fixing something and coming back the next day, just to remember what to do was challenging.” The daughter of Fey Fayigbe and older sibling to Richard, a fifth grader at Newby, Dasie moved to America from Nigeria when she was in fourth grade. The challenges faced by Dasie throughout her life have played a powerful role in her present life and in her near future. While unsure about where she will attend college, Dasie has identified her field of study. “Political Science,” said Dasie. “It’s going to be my four years preparing before I go to law school.” Why law school? Dasie wants to pursue a career as an immigration lawyer. “I want to make a difference helping people so it’s easier for them, so they don’t have to experience everything I did.” So who helped Dasie persevere as she moved through her adolescent years in Speedway? Seventh grade English teacher Tonya Carslon played a huge role. “Mrs. Carlson was a second Mom,” reflected Dasie. “She always listened. She was never judgmental. She was always the good part of the day.” And you just might see Dasie running track this year. She’s keeping it light why she might want to run. “Why not, I want the track banner.”
