Today, we are celebrating Reilly Rios-Vargas, a senior soccer player at Speedway High School. During his career at Speedway, he was a member of a program that captured four ICC championships and three sectional championships. Like many of his teammates, Reilly’s individual growth made himself and his teammates better each year. “Reilly was voted Most Improved this past season,” said varsity soccer coach Dean Heaviland. “I can honestly say that I’m not sure we’ve ever had a player make a bigger stride in their career than Reilly did.” “Reilly would always battle at practice and do all he could to make his teammates better,” noted Heaviland. “Reilly became one of our best defenders and it was hard for us to ever take him off the field.” While Reilly’s high school career has come to an end, his club soccer experience goes on. “In club, we’ve won some tournaments,” said Reilly. “ This year, we’re looking to win some out of state and we’re preparing to win State.” What does Reilly enjoy most about soccer? “Well, you make a lot of new friends,” said Reilly. “And the coaches will also help you out a lot in and out of school too. Everyone there are really good people.” Reilly’s first recollection of soccer involves his father. “He’s the reason I started playing,” said Reilly. “I always wanted to be like him because watching him play always inspired me. I always try my best to try and make him proud.” “Reilly is a great kid with a big heart and a great smile,” noted Heaviland. “I can’t wait to see him continue to do great things.” Reilly is the son of Reyes Rios and Sandra Vargas. He has two siblings: Daniel and Elizabeth.
