SPEEDWAY HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS

While the girls golf season enters its third competition week of the season, for the remaining seven Speedway sports teams, the season didn't kick off until Saturday morning. Speedway's cross country programs opened their fall campaigns, traveling to Lafayette Harrison. Tonight, the girls soccer team hopes to continue a trend of double digit win seasons when they host Indianapolis Lutheran. The Saints haven't had a team the last couple of falls and the Sparkplugs graduated several valuable players from last season's squad. Tomorrow, the Sparkplug campus will be busy with a pair of home matches. The volleyball program hosts Lebanon in its annual opening day matchup while the Sparkplug boys soccer program hosts 3A Whiteland. Also, the boys tennis team hits the road to play ICC rival Beech Grove. The girls golf team returns to the Brickyard Crossing course on Wednesday where they will host Brebeuf and Park Tudor. And on Friday night, the Sparkplug varsity football squad kicks off the season with a huge road matchup at 1A South Putnam, one of the teams expected to compete for a state championship.
