Yesterday, the bulk of the fall sports season opened for Speedway High School athletes. For the girls golf team, they are now entering Week 3 of the competitive season and on Monday, they hosted Decatur Central and Bloomington North in muggy conditions at the Brickyard Crossing. The boys and girls cross country team opened their seasons on Saturday when they traveled to Lafayette for the Harrison "Champ at the Amp" meet. Senior Morgan Smith finished sixth and the girls finished sixth out of fourteen girls teams competing while junior Luke Chastain finished 12th overall as the boys team finished eleventh of fifteen school competing. Saturday's meet was held at the high school home course for coach Kate Cunningham and next week's meet at Seymour is the hometown host of coaches Erika and Brian Hunteman. This afternoon, there are two events on campus. First, the boys tennis team kicks off its regular season with a match against Hoosier Legends Conference rival Beech Grove. The teams met twice last season with the Sparkplugs winning both matches last season. The girls soccer team kicks off its regular season Tuesday with a nonconference match against Herron. The Speedway girls defeated Herron twice within a week at the end of last season. The varsity soccer boys open their regular season tonight at Cascade. The Sparkplugs are ranked 16th in Class 2A and the Cadets are ranked #11. Both teams are also ranked in the IndyStar's top fifteen area programs so it's a big matchup for the Sparkplugs. The teams did not play last season but Speedway owns a 10-0 record against the Cascade in matchups taking place since 2014. Finally, the varsity and JV volleyball teams head to Lebanon to take on the Tigers tonight in their annual season opener. The varsity team will be eager to assess their progress after graduating seniors Laney Jarrett and Peyton Ridge. For more info on Speedway sports, visit @SparkplugSports on X (formerly Twitter).
