Today we celebrate Reagan Hendry, a senior student-athlete at Speedway High School. Reagan is currently representing the Lady Sparkplugs in girls basketball and she may play softball this spring. In the eyes of many, Reagan plays an important role as a member of the Class of 2024. “Reagan and I have a talked a lot about this … she is our success story!” exclaimed Joe Smith in an interview earlier this winter. “Having known her since elementary school, I have seen her grow into a mature young adult by learning how to handle adversity and to move on from it without dwelling on it.” “After suffering a season-ending injury last December, Reagan was extremely determined to get back and boy has she,” added Smith. “She had a great summer for us and she is a main cog in our wheel this season.” Reagan is one of several senior athletes on the girls basketball team that earned Academic-All Conference honors last season and participating in sports has created lots of opportunities. “I like making new friends and learning about how to play the sports that are fun,” said Reagan. While Reagan is excited about what’s going on in basketball and softball, she also appreciates the influence that her third grade teacher made at such a young age. “Mrs. McGee helped me through a rough time in my life,” reflected Reagan. “She made me feel like I could talk to her about everything and made me like school.” McGee’s influence might play a part in why Reagan is considering attending USI to study elementary education. Reagan has a sister (McKenzie) who is getting married on Friday. She also has a brother (Jack Elder) who is a junior at the high school. Reagan also has two younger siblings: Grant (Kindergarten) and Bowen (Pre-Kindergarten). Reagan is the daughter of Eli and Carrie Hendry.
