Today, we celebrate Isabel Moreno a member of the basketball and tennis programs for 4 seasons. In a talented senior class of student-athletes, Isabel is the glue to keeping things going at a high level. “Isabel has been a staple in our basketball program for 4 years,” said head coach Joe Smith. “She has been both a player and manager for us. Isabel is a tireless worker doing many behind-the-scenes duties. She is always someone we can count on to get the job done and is one of our unsung heroes.” For the past two seasons, the girls tennis team has lost to Covenant Christian in the championship match by a 2-3 margin. Isabel is one of five seniors returning who is eager to turn the tables on the result. “Isabel was our 2023 Mental Attitude Award winner for a reason,” noted head tennis coach Whitney Baker. “She is such a positive and supportive teammate. She works incredibly hard and always gives 100%. “Isabel is a tennis sponge,” noted Baker. “What I mean by that is she is constantly wanting to learn, grow, and adapt her tennis game. She asks questions instead of complaining and genuinely is a pleasure to have on our team.” Isabel also won the tennis team’s Mental Attitude Award as a sophomore, and last year she teamed with Hser Eh Ler to earn all-conference honors as one of the ICC’s top doubles teams. She feels like the tennis team is a mix of very special ingredients. “The tennis team has a unique bond,” said Isabel. “We may not be the best friends but we are always there for each other in whatever we do. When we are in practice, we have the ability to have our laughs and giggles but we also know when to be serious.” Isabel plans on attending Purdue University in Indianapolis to study mechanical engineering, a challenge that Isabel looks forward to. And it’s an attitude that has been formed in part by Isabel’s observations during her basketball experiences with Coach Smith. “As a manager, we get to see all of the things behind the scenes and one of these things is the locker room talks,” reflected Isabel. “One thing that has stuck to me is his words of fighting through adversity. Since my freshman year when I started to manage the basketball team, I have been able to fight through adversity in sports and even my personal life thanks to Mr. Smith.” “Our world is a better place with Isabel in it,” stated Smith.
