It is Sectional week for the girls athletics programs at Speedway High School. For the varsity girls basketball team, it’s another attempt to capture a sectional championship that has eluded the program since 2013. The Sparkplug girls (13-7 overall, 5-2 ICC) will compete in Sectional 28 at Beech Grove this year. The Sparkplugs will open tournament play facing Cardinal Ritter (7-15, 1-6 ICC) at 6 p.m. tonight. The Sparkplugs (13-7, 5-2 ICC) handlily defeated the Raiders (6-16, 1-5 ICC) on November 10th. With a win, the Sparkplugs would face Indianapolis Washington (4-12, 1-3 Greater Indianapolis) in the 6 p.m. semifinal game on Friday. On the other side of the bracket, three teams Beech Grove (14-8, 4-3 ICC), Christel House (7-9, 1-3 Greater Indianapolis), and Purdue Poly-Englewood (9-10, 2-0 Greater Indianapolis) will vie for a championship matchup berth on Saturday evening at 7:30 pm. Purdue Poly-Englewood is the defending sectional champ. The winner of Sectional 28 will play in the IHSAA Class 3A Regional round on Saturday February 10th at a site to be determined by the IHSAA. In girls swimming, a small but determined Speedway squad will travel to Pike on Thursday to compete in the 15 team IHSAA sectional at Pike.
