The fall and winter sports seasons are complete at Speedway. Student-athletes are preparing for the spring competition seasons and they have more than individual or team glory on the line. Speedway’s athletes are competing for the honor of being the best sports program in the Indiana Crossroads Conference. Each year, the eight ICC schools (Beech Grove, Cascade, Cardinal Ritter, Lutheran, Monrovia, Scecina, Speedway, Triton Central) compete to see not only who is the best in each individual sport, they also compete to see which schools have the best girls sports, best boys sports, and best overall athletic program in ICC competition. The Sparkplugs lead the all-sports overall race after the conclusion of the fall and winter sports seasons. The Speedway boys program holds a 19 point lead over both Cardinal Ritter and Cascade entering the spring season. Speedway’s lead has been built by strong performances resulting in a conference championship, four second place finishes, and one third place finish out of seven sports. A talented boys golf team should be positioned to compete for an ICC title this spring and a lot of athleticism is in place for the baseball and track programs to excel. On the girls side, the Sparkplugs entered the winter season in third place and completed the winter season in second place. Speedway trails league-leading Cascade by ten points entering the spring season. The Sparkplugs finished a strong second place in girls tennis last spring and return a strong contingent of that team for one more run at ICC and sectional titles. Like the guys, a lot of athleticism returns for the softball and track programs meaning this race will be decided during meaningful ICC competition. In the overall sports race, the Sparkplugs with 152 points lead second place Cascade by eleven points. The next closest team is Cardinal Ritter with 122 points. Cascade leaves the ICC at the conclusion of this season and Covenant Christian joins the ICC in the fall.
